Sikkim got first women’s bank in India, Bharatiya Mahila Bank, wholly owned by the Government of India. Bharatiya Mahila Bank’s 23rd branch was inaugurated in Gangtok by Jayashree Pradhan, former Principal Secretary to the Government of Sikkim, in presence of Usha Ananthasubramanian, Chairman and Managing director of the Bank. The bank aims to facilitate the women customer by providing higher interest rates and better facilities.

Inaugurating the first ever women bank in the state, Pradhan said the it was an hounour to inaugurate a women centric bank, which will impact the lives of the ordinary women by empowering them to realize their dreams. She further congratulated the bank and urged to expand the service of the bank in Sikkim as there is immense potential for taking the women into the fold of financial services.
The chairman and the managing director of the bank informed that the Bank is designed to cater the needs of women and offers the entire banking and financial services. The access to finance and banking not only helps empower women but also broadens the social base of development, thus focusing equitable growth.
The bank at present is offering an interest of 5% on saving bank Account with balance of Rupees One lakh and above. The bank would offer collateral free loans upto Rs.1 Crore by covering it under CGTMSE. The bank has also tied up with TATA Motors.
